Frequently Asked Questions

General questions about a MusicalMe class

7
How many children are in the class and what is the age range?

Each class has from six to fourteen children enrolled. Your child may bring any number of adults with them at no added cost. Our classes embrace a mixed-age philosophy. We believe that young children learn best in a mixed age setting so we invite children birth through five to attend our mixed age classes. Our babies classes are designed for infants, newborn through 8 months.

What can I expect from class?

Our classes are designed for children ages birth through five. At MusicalMe, we believe that music ability is as much a basic life skill as walking and talking, and that all children can learn to sing in tune, keep a beat, and participate with pleasure and confidence in the music of their culture. Our classes nurture the child’s natural enthusiasm for music and movement as we sing, dance, chant, and play instruments in an informal setting that will enrich her musical environment and guide her towards a lifetime of music-making enjoyment.

What kind of things do we do in class?

We sing, dance, chant, and play along with provided instruments to a variety of music styles, melodies, and rhythms. You and your child will experience creative movement, improvisation, finger play, and lap songs. Above all else, we have fun while creating a rich and lively musical community.

Why aren’t there separate classes for different age groups?

Classes with children of different ages have intellectual and social benefits for both younger and older children. In fact, it's the learning environment recommended by many early childhood researchers. Older children learn empathy and awareness of others, while developing leadership qualities and gaining self-confidence. Younger children learn by imitating the older ones and often show more complex behaviors earlier than usual. Even babies benefit by being in an environment that gives them lots of opportunities to observe the behavior of children of varying ages. Plus, it allows everyone - siblings, parents, grandparents, caregivers - to share in the musical experience together!

Why didn't my child participate in class?

Children’s responses depend on their most dominant learning style and temperament as well as their age and developmental level. Some might follow the teacher right away. Others stay close to Mom or Dad, observing and listening. Some might crawl or toddle around; others are stimulated by the music and respond more actively, running, jumping, or dancing. All are perfectly natural responses to the new, musically rich environment. Throughout the session, your teacher will help you tune in to how your child learns best so you can support their music development in class and at home. Feel free to ask if you have questions!

7
Why did the teacher say it was OK for my child to not sit in the circle during class time?

At MusicalMe, children are never required to sit in the circle or expected to conform to an adult’s idea of participation. We know that children learn differently from adults. They learn instinctively and constantly, through observation, interactions with adults and older children, and through imitation, play, and, especially, movement. One hallmark of Music Together® is the insight that children will naturally develop music ability simply when they are immersed in a community of families all making music.

6
7
How long is a session?

Each class meets once a week for forty-five minutes. The fall, winter and spring sessions vary from ten to twelve weeks and the summer session is six weeks.

6
7
May I bring my three year old as well as my 10-month old to the same class?

Not only you may, but we encourage it! Research shows that children learn best in a mixed-age environment. Little ones learn by watching and imitating older children. Older children learn by being the "big kids" and showing their younger peers how it is done. This family-style learning environment facilitates participation and involvement in the music for every child, at whatever developmental stage they may be.

6
7
What happens after we complete a session?

A different song collection is used each session, rotating every three years, so with every new session you can look forward to expanding your repertoire with a variety of new songs and chants. Because your child will be at a different stage developmentally, an activity will be exciting to him, whether it is because of its familiarity or because he can grasp it in a new way.

7
May I bring a guest to class?

Yes! One of the great things about Music Together® classes is that tuition is based on each child, not person. Any child may bring their parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles, or friends of the family. If they are OVER the age of 7, they may attend FREE!

6
7
How do I bring a guest under the age of seven?

If the child you would like to bring is under seven, then we consider them a participant. Each participant must be registered for the class or on the make up scheduler. For each unregistered child under the age of seven, there is a $25.00 guest fee due prior to bringing your guest to class, and should be paid prior to class through your account on the Enrolled Family Portal on our website. If possible, please let your teacher know in advance that you plan to bring an unregistered child (under seven) and will pay the guest fee prior to class. ***We are unable to accommodate guests in our FULL classes. Please sign up you and your guest in a class where space is available.

6
7
May I choose a different time/day every week?

After you have enrolled in a specific class, that is the class you will be expected to attend. Since classes build on themselves through the session and children get to know the teacher and the other children with their parents, we ask that you stick to your class day/time.

6
7
May I switch my class once the session has begun?

There are many reasons why someone may need to switch classes - work, family commitments, naps, etc. Please check with your registering location for their policy. In locations where switching is permitted, space must be available in the class you wish to move to and cleared through the office with which you registered, prior to attending that class.

You may schedule a make up through your account on the Enrolled Family Portal for the class you missed, or cancel your make up class up to 5 minutes before the scheduled class time.
